Our Tokyo adventure continued in Harajuku, where we visited the Kawaii Monster cafe. This cafe is an overload of cuteness, color, sweets, and animals. It is supposedly meant to represent the inside of a monster's belly - a monster that has a strict diet of kawaii cuteness. The restaurant is split up into 4 zones of the mushroom disco, milk stand, bar experiment, and the mel-tea room. Even their menu has all types of colorful food and drinks from rainbow spaghetti to rainbow cake and even menu items with the name "color poison cake" #what? #isthatlegal #translatefail
This place was completely overwhelming but in a fantastic way. We enjoyed a little afternoon coffee pick me up and even a got to watch a show performed on the main carousel with the kawaii monster girls!
In January, I got a random phone call from my good friend from my sorority, Paige, who was backpacking through Asia, asking me to meet her in Tokyo in a few weeks to have some fun for a few days in mainland Japan. Ummm.... let me take 2 seconds to think about that - YES! #thanksnate #axo #sistasfolife
I hopped on a quick 3 hour flight over to Tokyo and met up with Paige at the Narita Airport after her red eye over from the Philippines. #longlostfriends #lettheshenanigansbegin! Lucky for us, my friend Kazunobu who lives in Tokyo, texted me to see what we were up to for the day, and offered to pick us up and drive us around #score!
Checked into our hostel, and we were ready to eat! Kazu started off our fun day by taking us to one of his favorite restaurants for lunch, Isen Honten. This place was delicious! #oishi It has been around for 80 years and it's to see why after tasting the food. They're known for their tonkatsu, panko-fried pork cutlets and is the birthplace of the tonkatsu sandwich. People say the tonkatsu here is so tender that you are able to cut it with chopsticks. #ibelieveit Kazu recommended the pork sirloin cutlets and these were SO. DAMN. GOOD! Honestly, me writing this blog 4 months later, my mouth still waters when I think about them. If you visit Tokyo - you need to eat here. #thankskazu #welcometojapanpaige
On our way back to the hotel, we stopped by a pub near our hotel for a quick beer and snack #mmmcraftbeer #internationalcraftbeer
Finally, the long awaited day had arrived.... Mel came to visit us!! Our plan of action: Meet in Tokyo -> hang out in Okinawa -> end the trip in Hong Kong #Ithinkthatqualifiesasagoodasiatrip #melladora (#doratheexplorer) #worldtraveler
Nate and I flew to meet Mel #hellamel in Tokyo so we could explore this crazy, amazing city together. Must have been a popular time to visit since it took Mel almost 2 hours to get through customs! #isshehereyet?? As soon as we were able to give each other quick hugs and scream with excitement - we raced to catch the Narita Express to take us from the airport to the neighborhood of Shinjuku. #reunitedanditfeelssogood The hour train ride gave Mel and I time to catch up on all the latest gossip between her love life, work, school, and our adventures over in Asia. #girltalk
