On our second full day in Beijing we visited the Great Wall of China! We went to the Mutianyu section which is about 3 km long, houses 26 watchtowers, and was built during the early Ming dynasty. We 'hiked' from watchtower 6 to watchtower 15. Lucky for us, since it had snowed the day before, the smog had cleared up and we had a beautiful sunny day! We took a chairlift up to the top and got to toboggan down! (link to a youtube video I found of someone also doing this is posted below in case you want to see what it's like. Start about 1:50 in)
I'll let the pictures do most the talking on this blog but a few things we learned while riding in our tour car there and back:
Here's the youtube video of the toboggan ride down that someone took a few years back. Start at about 1:50 in to see the ride down!
After walking around the Great Wall for a few hours we grabbed a quick lunch before heading back to Beijing. We enjoyed some dumplings because what else would you eat for lunch in China?! #yum #stuffedwithdumplings #dumplingfoodbabies
That night, we checked out Donghuamen Night Market, which was right down the street from our hotel, near the Forbidden City. This had all types of stuff to try (most of which we didn't) like scorpions, bugs, tarantulas, shark, snacks, animal balls, and so on. We stuck to a fried banana (it was delicious!), pineapple fried rice (served in a pineapple), dumplings, steamed buns, and empenada type of food. Great variety of food, and fun to see. Wish I could have been more adventurous and tried the bugs but I don't think I could have mentally gotten over the whole bug in my mouth trying to swallow....
Next stop, the Forbidden City!
